Karri V. Elite '2021. The park includes two miles of protected tidal beaches, a lighthouse, open meadow lands, dramatic sea cliffs, forest groves, active sand dunes, thickets, and streams. It makes for great stroll with friends, family, pets, etc. The most popular route is the 2.8-mile “Discovery Park Loop,” which travels approximately around the park’s perimeter through coniferous and deciduous forests, past the meadows and shrubs, and above the bluffs overlooking the water (you’ll want to stop here a moment to take in the vista before you). It was pretty magical to see Mt Rainer and the sound. The Discovery Park & Lighthouse Loop trail is roughly 4.4 miles. 45th becomes 46th Avenue North. And even though we couldn’t see as much, it was still beautiful. Also see signs to Daybreak Star. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. The park is built on the historic grounds of Fort Lawton, which was originally a Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the Civil War. This beach is a sand beach with an iconic lighthouse at the end. Discovery Park is closer to just a patch of woods left untouched in an otherwise rapidly developing city. Trail was pretty good.
